Australia to Zanzibar

I first visited Zanzibar in 2025, not knowing how deeply it would stay with me. It wasn’t just the beauty of the island, although the beaches, the colours, and the endless ocean views are unforgettable. It was the feeling of the place. The slower pace of life, the warmth of the people, and the way everything seems to move in rhythm with the tide.

Days felt unhurried, shaped by the light and the ocean. I found myself drawn to the simple moments — sitting by the water, watching the tide shift, sharing food, and feeling completely present. Zanzibar has a way of gently slowing you down, inviting you to notice things you might otherwise miss.

When I left, I carried that feeling with me. I didn’t know exactly what it would lead to, but I knew it wasn’t the end of my time there. Something about the island stayed quietly in the background, waiting.

My time across East Africa deepened that connection in ways I hadn’t expected. In Uganda, I sat quietly with gorillas in the mountains — an experience that felt grounding, humbling, and unlike anything I had ever known. Being so close to them in their natural environment was a powerful reminder of how connected we all are to the world around us.

In Kenya, I explored the calm, timeless charm of Lamu, where life moves at its own gentle pace. Later, I celebrated my 50th birthday in Diani with a sunset dhow ride, surrounded by the ocean and that soft golden light that seems to stretch endlessly across the horizon.

Each place offered something unique, but the feeling was the same — a deeper sense of presence, simplicity, and connection. These weren’t just places I visited, but moments that shifted how I experienced time and space.

A Journey That Led Me Here

Through these experiences, I began to notice what I was truly drawn to. It wasn’t the busy schedules or fast-moving environments I had known before, but the quiet, meaningful moments — time spent outdoors, by the water, with space to breathe and slow down.

I found joy in simplicity. Sharing food, watching the light change, feeling the rhythm of the ocean, and being fully present in those small but significant moments. There was a sense of calm and clarity that came from stepping away from constant movement and allowing things to unfold naturally.

Zanzibar brought all of this together in one place. The people, the coastline, and the atmosphere created a feeling that was both grounding and inspiring. It became clear that this wasn’t just somewhere I enjoyed visiting — it was somewhere I wanted to return to, and something I wanted to build around.

Now, I am coming back to live in Zanzibar and create The Shoreline Society. It feels like a natural next step — a way to build something meaningful that reflects everything I’ve experienced along the way.

The idea is simple. To create beautifully styled beach picnic experiences that allow others to slow down and enjoy the moment, without the effort or planning. A space where people can connect, celebrate, and take in the surroundings in a way that feels relaxed and effortless.

Each picnic will be thoughtfully designed, combining comfort, simplicity, and a touch of something special. Inspired by the places I’ve been and the moments that stayed with me, The Shoreline Society is about creating experiences that feel easy, memorable, and genuine.

A simple idea, shaped by a journey that led me back to the ocean.
